A new driveway is one of the best investments you can make in your home. It boosts kerb appeal, adds value, and creates a welcoming entrance. You’ve chosen the right materials and had it professionally installed, and it looks fantastic. But how do you protect that investment and keep it looking pristine for years to come?

Here at Towergate Builders, we believe in building things to last. But with the varied Kent weather, from summer heatwaves to winter frosts, a little TLC goes a long way. This simple, seasonal guide will help you keep your driveway in top condition, year after year.

Spring Clean (March - May)

As the days get longer, it’s the perfect time to wash away the winter grime.

  • The Big Wash: Start by sweeping the entire surface with a stiff brush. For a deeper clean, use warm soapy water and a brush, or a pressure washer.

  • A Word of Caution on Pressure Washers: While effective, pressure washers can cause damage if used incorrectly. Always use a fan-nozzle attachment (never a direct jet), keep the nozzle at least 30cm from the surface, and spray at a shallow angle. Crucially, avoid pointing it directly into the joints of block paving, as this can blast out the essential jointing sand.

  • Weed Watch: Spring is when weeds make their move. Check the joints of block paving and pull any newcomers by hand. For more stubborn growth, a targeted weed killer is effective. A good installation minimises this, but it’s wise to stay vigilant.

  • Annual Inspection: Give the whole area a once-over to check for any movement or issues that may have developed over winter.

Summer Care (June - August)

Summer maintenance is all about staying on top of things.

  • Regular Sweeping: Keep your driveway free of dust, garden debris, and dirt. This not only looks tidier but prevents surface staining and stops permeable surfaces from getting clogged.

  • Tackle Spills Immediately: Act fast on any spills from cars (oil, petrol) or summer BBQs (grease, wine). For oil on block paving or tarmac, covering the spill with cat litter can absorb a lot of it before you clean the stain. For resin, use a mild detergent and warm water.

  • Mind the Heat: On a very hot day, tarmac can soften slightly. Avoid turning your car’s steering wheel while it’s stationary, as this can create scuff marks on the surface.

Autumn Prep (September - November)

Your main job in autumn is to manage falling leaves.

  • Leaf Management: Don’t let leaves sit! As they decay, they release tannins that can leave significant brown stains, especially on lighter-coloured block paving and natural stone. Sweep them away regularly or use a leaf blower.

  • Clear Your Drains: Ensure any nearby drains and gullies are clear of leaves and debris. This prevents water from overflowing and pooling on your driveway during heavy autumn downpours.

  • Gravel Check: If you have a gravel driveway, now is a good time to give it a thorough rake to even out the surface and identify any sparse areas that may need a top-up before winter.

Winter Protection (December - February)

Winter care is about preventing damage from ice and snow.

  • Be Careful with Salt: Never use standard brown rock salt (sodium chloride) on concrete block paving. It can chemically react with the concrete, causing the surface to crumble and flake over time (a process called spalling).

  • Use Safe Alternatives: To de-ice your drive, use “white” de-icing salt (calcium or magnesium chloride) which is safer for paving, or simply use a layer of sand for grip.

  • Avoid Metal Tools: If you need to clear snow, use a plastic shovel. Metal shovels and scrapers can easily scratch, chip, and permanently damage any driveway surface.

A Quick Tip for Your Driveway Type

  • Block Paving: Consider topping up the jointing sand every 2-3 years to keep the blocks secure and inhibit weed growth.

  • Resin-Bound: Incredibly low maintenance. Just keep it clean and avoid dragging sharp or heavy objects across the surface.

  • Tarmac: Keep an eye out for any small cracks. Filling them early will prevent water from getting in and causing bigger problems.

  • Gravel: Rake every few months to keep it looking neat and top up with fresh gravel every couple of years to maintain a good depth.

Taking these simple steps will ensure your driveway remains a feature you can be proud of for its entire lifespan.
