Raj Green Indian Sandstone Patio & Retaining Wall Installation | Tonbridge, Kent
Location: Tonbridge, Kent
Project: Indian Sandstone Patio, Retaining Wall & Drainage Installation
Duration: 2–3 days
Project Overview
This Tonbridge property had an aging garden layout that no longer functioned as a usable or attractive outdoor space. The existing area consisted of weathered timber decking, timber sleeper retaining edges, and uneven ground levels that had deteriorated over time.
Drainage was a particular concern, with surface water sitting close to the property during wet weather. The homeowners wanted to completely remove the decking and timber structures and replace them with a long-lasting patio, a solid brick retaining wall, and a proper drainage system that would future-proof the garden.
We designed and installed a Raj Green Indian sandstone patio, a red brick retaining wall finished with charcoal brick coping, and an ACO channel drainage system to create a clean, durable, and visually striking outdoor space.
Before
Before work began, the garden showed clear signs of age and wear:
- Old timber decking with visible weathering and algae
- Timber sleeper retaining edges beginning to deteriorate
- Uneven levels between the patio area and raised lawn
- Poor drainage causing water to sit near the house
- Limited usable seating space
- A tired overall appearance that no longer suited the property
The combination of failing timber structures and inadequate drainage meant a full removal and rebuild was the best long-term solution.

Step 1 – Groundworks & Excavation
We started by excavating the area to the required depths for the patio base, retaining wall foundations, and drainage runs. This involved:
- Removing old paving and soil
- Digging footings for the retaining wall
- Excavating for a stable patio sub-base
- Shaping levels to ensure correct water run-off
All spoil was removed from site, leaving a clean foundation for construction.
Step 2 – Retaining Wall Construction
To support the raised lawn area, we built a solid red brick retaining wall, carefully laid on concrete foundations for strength and longevity.
The wall was finished with charcoal brick coping, which provides:
- A sharp, modern contrast to the red brick
- Protection from weathering
- A clean, premium edge detail
The finished wall not only serves a structural purpose but also frames the patio beautifully.
Step 3 – ACO Drainage System Installation
Proper drainage was essential for this project. We installed an ACO channel drainage system along the patio edge closest to the property to safely manage surface water.
The system:
- Prevents water pooling on the patio
- Directs rainwater away from the house
- Reduces the risk of damp and flooding
- Integrates neatly into the paving layout
All drainage was tested to ensure correct flow before paving began.
Step 4 – Laying the Raj Green Indian Sandstone Patio
With the groundwork complete, we laid the Raj Green Indian sandstone in a carefully planned pattern to enhance the space and maximise visual impact.
Raj Green sandstone offers:
- Natural colour variation with greens, greys, and warm tones
- Excellent durability
- A timeless, high-end appearance
- Slip resistance suitable for year-round use
Each slab was individually cut and laid on a full mortar bed for long-term stability and a flawless finish.
Final Result
The completed project has completely transformed the garden into a functional, elegant outdoor space. The Indian sandstone patio provides a generous seating and entertaining area, while the red brick retaining wall with charcoal coping adds structure and definition to the garden levels.
Combined with the ACO drainage system, the space is now practical, low-maintenance, and built to last.
Another successful garden transformation completed in Tonbridge, Kent, and another very happy customer.
