Block Paved Pathway | Canterbury
- Location: Blean, Canterbury
- Project: Block Paved Pathway
- Duration: 3 days
Project Overview
We were recently commissioned to design and install a new block paved pathway for a property in Blean, Canterbury. The client wanted a practical and attractive solution to replace the worn-out garden path and improve access around the side of the house.
Before
The designated area was completely overgrown with weeds and brambles. A few old, mismatched paving slabs formed a broken path, and a prominent manhole cover sat awkwardly in the middle of the space, making it both unsightly and impractical.
After
The finished result is a stunning, contemporary patio that completely transforms the space. The cool, consistent tones of the grey Indian sandstone create a spacious and sophisticated feel. The previously obtrusive manhole cover has been cleverly integrated with a recessed tray, and the entire area is now a clean, level, and inviting outdoor room.

Step 1 – Initial Clearance & Excavation
The project began with the removal of soil, old turf, and debris along the side of the property. Once cleared, the ground was excavated to the required depth, ensuring enough space for the new sub-base, sharp sand bedding, and the block paving.
Step 2 – Sub-Base Preparation
A strong and stable foundation is vital for any paving project. We installed a compacted layer of MOT Type 1 hardcore across the length of the pathway. This was carefully levelled and machine-compacted to provide a solid base that would withstand foot traffic and prevent future sinking or movement.
Step 3 – Edge Restraints & Borders
To give the pathway a clean and professional look, we installed dark charcoal edging blocks along both sides. These acted as restraints to keep the pathway neat and secure while also enhancing the visual contrast with the chosen block colours
Step 4 – Sand Bedding & Block Laying
A layer of sharp sand was spread evenly and screeded to create the perfect bedding for the blocks. The pathway was then carefully laid using a herringbone pattern for added strength and style. The blocks used were a blend of traditional red and autumn tones, complemented by the charcoal borders.
Step 5 – Compaction & Jointing
Once all the blocks were in place, the pathway was compacted using a vibrating plate compactor. Kiln-dried sand was then brushed into the joints to lock the blocks securely, preventing movement and improving durability.
Step 6 – Finishing Touches
The entire pathway was given a final sweep and clean down to remove access sand. The neat borders and smooth finish created a visually appealing and highly practical pathway that blends seamlessly with the existing driveway and garden area.
Final Result
This project in Blean, Canterbury is another great example of how block paving can enhance both the look and function of an outdoor space. With strong foundations and a professionally laid finish, this pathway will serve the property for many years to come.
