Project Overview
This project in Whitstable was focused on reclaiming an overgrown and neglected corner of a garden and turning it into a clean, modern, and highly usable patio space, perfect for outdoor living and entertaining.
Before
The designated area was completely overgrown with weeds and brambles. A few old, mismatched paving slabs formed a broken path, and a prominent manhole cover sat awkwardly in the middle of the space, making it both unsightly and impractical.
After
The finished result is a stunning, contemporary patio that completely transforms the space. The cool, consistent tones of the grey Indian sandstone create a spacious and sophisticated feel. The previously obtrusive manhole cover has been cleverly integrated with a recessed tray, and the entire area is now a clean, level, and inviting outdoor room.
Step 1 – Site Clearance & Excavation
The first and most crucial step was to completely clear the area. We removed all the weeds, overgrown vegetation, and old paving slabs. The area was then excavated to the required depth to create a solid foundation for the new patio.
Step 2 – Foundation & Weed Control
With a clean slate, we laid a heavy-duty weed control membrane across the entire area to prevent future growth. On top of this, we installed and compacted a substantial MOT Type 1 sub-base, creating a solid and stable foundation essential for a durable patio.
Step 3 – Laying the Sandstone
The grey Indian sandstone slabs were then carefully laid on a full bed of mortar. Each slab was positioned according to a mixed-size “random” pattern to create visual interest. A key part of this stage was skillfully cutting the slabs to fit perfectly around the new recessed manhole cover, ensuring a seamless and professional finish.
Step 4 – Jointing & Finishing
Once all the slabs were in place, the joints were filled with a durable jointing compound. This is not only secures the paving but also completes the clean, contemporary aesthetic of the patio.
