We recently completed a bespoke Tobermore Bracken block paved patio in Postling, near Folkstone, transforming a tired and unused garden area into a stylish, functional outdoor space.
The customer wanted a low-maintenance seating area that blended naturally with the surrounding landscape while adding structure and character to the garden.
The Before
As shown in the images, the area originally consisted of:
- Bare soil and uneven ground
- No defined patio or seating space
- Overgrown edges and poor usability
- Lack of structure within the garden layout
The space had potential but needed a full redesign and proper groundwork to make it usable.

Laying the Tobermore Bracken Pavers
1. Excavation & Groundworks
We began by excavating the area to the required depth, removing all loose soil and vegetation to create a clean base for installation.
2. Membrane & Sub-Base Preparation
A weed control membrane was installed, followed by a compacted sub-base to provide a strong and stable foundation.
3. Sharp Sand Screed
A layer of sharp sand was laid and levelled to create a perfectly even bed for the block paving.
4. Laying the Tobermore Bracken Blocks
We installed Tobermore Bracken block paving in a neat, uniform pattern, carefully cutting around the curved edges to create a soft, natural shape that fits seamlessly into the garden.
These blocks are known for their warm, rustic tones and slightly aged appearance, giving a traditional yet timeless finish .
5. Edging & Decorative Finish
The patio was finished with clean edging and surrounded by decorative gravel, enhancing drainage and giving the space a polished, complete look.
6. Finishing Touches
Jointing sand was brushed into the blocks and compacted to lock everything firmly in place.
